I usually don't wade into ebay discussions/disagreements, but I did see this one today and felt compelled to comment: Vintage Straight Razor:89 PUMA SOLINGEN GERMANY SPECIAL | eBay :eek:
My jaw definitely hit the ground when I saw that one. Nice razor and all, but at that price? You could buy several in excellent or mint condition at that amount. That being said, there's no doubt in my mind that it will find a buyer.
You would think at that price it should at least include free shipping...lol. Not in this guys lifetime.
I know at least one person who has named this his unicorn piece of shaving gear.
I'm sure he's not alone out there.
I believe it will sell!
I'll tell you, about 5 years ago I got that same razor in mint condition. it belonged to a retired Brain-Surgeon on the west coast who couldn't use it anymore. I got it on Eboy for $60.00 There should be a moral to the story.

BTW, I was wondering, because I see some scales that color sometimes, with those lines going through them (look closely in one of the pics) are those lines indicative of ivory? Wasn't there another thread on this same seller and razor a month or so ago ? I figured it was a typo on his part. Guess not. No one in their right mind would pay that for a Puma, I don't care how nice it is.
The scales are plastic or celluloid, definitely not ivory.
Wow, all you honemeisters have been undercharging for years, and finishing the razor way too fast. Says honing will take 4-6 days to complete. You guys should be ashamed of yourself finishing razors that fast and charging so little.:rofl2:
The concepts of pricing & value in Japan are very strange to us westerners eg if you own a Ferrari in Japan & send it to a top mechanic for modding & tuneup you would fully expect to pay half the value of the car for that service. So $1200 for an '89 is ridiculous for us but in Japan may be quite realistic & the $30 honing fee would be dead cheap.
I'm not so sure a blacksmith shop is the place I'd want my razor honed. I have no idea if the place listed is quality or not but it seems as though razors are not their primary focus. The possibility is there that someone pays $1244 for the razor, shipping, and honing and it shows up needing maintenance.
At least it looks like the man in the picture is sharpening the blade on a stone. Isaw one listing on ebay a while back that offered a honing service. It showed a picture of someone honing a blade on a lapidary faceter.
He has to charge that much in order to recoup the $4.60 a SECOND he paid some guy to stretch a 10-second video into 4 and a half minutes.Quote:

I have two and I love mine, but I would never pay that much for one or for any razor. I don't think any razor is worth that much to me, even (especially, in my case) customs.
Well, the seller has achieved his goal. He is popular now. His Puma and his pricing discussed on all forums. Bravo, Suzuki san!
